Palm Island Resort & Spa has raised over $1,000,000 EC (Eastern Caribbean dollar) for Union Island in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the Grenadines in recent history. Despite facing challenges of its own, Palm Island has prioritized immediate relief efforts for the communities hardest hit by the storm, showcasing its commitment to being a good neighbor and caring for the region.
Hurricane Beryl wreaked havoc across Union Island, leaving many residents, including the beloved staff members of Palm Island Resort & Spa, without homes and essential resources. Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, Palm Island launched a comprehensive relief initiative, including a GoFundMe campaign that has successfully raised over $1,000,000 EC including additional private donations. The funds are being meticulously managed to ensure that every dollar directly aids those in need on Union Island.
James Lane, Managing Director of Palm Island, expressed deep compassion for the affected communities, stating, “Our team means the world to us, which is why we are working around the clock to keep them well. While the Caribbean is our home and one of the world’s most beautiful places to spend a vacation, it is the people who make this amazing holiday destination so special. Their warmth, their vibrancy, and their pride. Without them, hospitality simply would not exist.”
In a remarkable show of solidarity, Palm Island has already dispatched two 40-foot containers filled with essential supplies, including building materials, medical supplies, food, water, and clothing. These critical resources are being sent from Miami, ensuring that the residents of Union Island have the necessary tools to begin rebuilding their lives and community. Additionally, several private boats carrying relief supplies have been organized from Trinidad, further demonstrating the breadth of Palm Island’s efforts.
The funds raised are also earmarked for the restoration of vital infrastructure on Union Island, such as the medical clinic, airport, and community centers. In a region where many do not have access to insurance, these efforts are crucial for the recovery and long-term resilience of the community.
Palm Island’s dedication to aiding Union Island before addressing its own damages is a testament to the deep bonds and shared humanity within the southern Grenadines. This selfless act of prioritizing their neighbors reflects the resort’s understanding of the broader impact on the region’s tourism and community welfare.
As Palm Island continues to support Union Island’s recovery, plans are also in place to restore its own facilities. The resort looks forward to reopening and once again offering guests a unique slice of paradise, all while continuing to play an active role in the region’s recovery.
The generosity and compassion displayed by Palm Island and its supporters illustrate the power of community and the importance of coming together in times of crisis. Donations continue to be welcomed, with every contribution making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected.
“We hope that in the wake of this crisis, we can rebuild and restore businesses, lives, and opportunity in the Southern Grenadines,” said Lane.
This heartfelt initiative by Palm Island not only exemplifies the spirit of good neighborliness but also underscores the strength and resilience of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines community. As the region rebuilds, the unwavering support from Palm Island serves as a reminder of the power of solidarity and the human spirit.
