A Nordic Midsummer Journey Across Scandinavia

Scandinavian Summer At Its Best. Image credit: ESS Group
This June, ESS Group celebrates Midsummer across its destinations in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, with each location offering a distinct expression of the summer solstice. From a restorative take in the Stockholm archipelago and high-energy city celebrations in Gothenburg, to countryside traditions in southern Sweden, the midnight sun in Norway and bonfires on the Danish coast.
STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO
Located on the tip of Lidingö, just 20 minutes from Stockholm, Ellery Beach House brings together the feel of a laid-back Mediterranean beach club with the forests and shoreline of the Swedish archipelago. Over Midsummer weekend, the hotel marks the summer solstice with traditional dining by the hotel’s newly updated Palmer’s restaurant concept, and relaxed afternoons at Coco Pool Club and spa.
Guests can enjoy leisurely forest walks at the nearby nature reserve, lake and open water swimming, cycle to a local brewery or cider press, join a traditional Swedish Midsummer feast at Hestegaholm, or island-hop around Stockholm’s archipelago.
GOTHENHURG I THE URBAN TAKE ON MIDSUMMER
Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden, offers two very different interpretations to the classic celebrations.
- At Jacy’z Hotel & Resort Midsummer takes a contemporary, high-energy feel. At this 27-floor vertical property, the focus is entertainment-driven as days begin at PAM’S Pool Deck & Lounge, one of Gothenburg’s largest rooftop terraces, with a heated outdoor pool, cabanas and skyline views, before moving to Pachanga Pool Club for cocktails, music and sunset over the city. The mood is social, urban and distinctly international. This is Midsummer reimagined for those who want to pair Swedish tradition with a dynamic hotel scene.
- In the heart of the city, the more intimate Hotel Pigalle offers a theatrical interpretation known for its Parisian-inspired interiors, candlelit restaurant Atelier, rooftop terrace, late-night jazz and piano bar.
Guests can combine their stay and discover the West Sweden archipelago, with the islands of Brännö and Vrångö easily reached from central Gothenburg in under an hour by tram and ferry. There, traditional celebrations unfold with flower crowns, maypole dancing and long outdoor lunches before returning to the city.
SOUTHERN SWEDEN I THE CLASSIC CELEBRATION
In Skåne, Maryhill Estate offers the most classic interpretation of Midsummer. Set between rolling countryside and the coast overlooking the island of Ven, the estate captures the slower, more nostalgic side of the Swedish summer, where the focus is on tradition, seasonal food and outdoor gatherings.
Guests can expect flower crown making, lawn games, aquavit lunches and long poolside dinners in the gardens followed by walks through the grounds and the nearby fishing village of Ålabodarna or boat and bike rides across the island. The experience is anchored by Hill House, the estate’s restaurant and social hub, where guests can get a taste of southern Sweden’s local produce, alongside the estate’s curated wine selection including their own grown variety of Solaris.
NORWAY I THE MIDNIGHT SUN AT FYRI RESORT
Where Sweden’s Midsummer is rooted in ritual and social tradition, Norway’s version is more elemental centred on the outdoors, the mountains and the rare experience of the sun never quite setting. Here, the solstice celebrations honour the midnight sun. The light lingers long into the night, creating an extended golden hour that gives the mountains around Hemsedal a surreal glow.
At Fýri Resort, guests have direct access to hiking trails, waterfalls, biking routes and valley walks, making it one of the most dramatic settings in which to celebrate the season.
DENMARK I SANKT HANS BY THE SEA
In Denmark, Midsummer is celebrated as Sankt Hans. Taking place on June 23, the tradition is marked by bonfires, communal dinners and long evenings spent outdoors. Compared with the mountains of Norway or the Swedish countryside, Denmark brings the celebrations on the coast.
The newly opened Rox Resort located outside of Copenhagen, presents the perfect oceanfront setting to celebrate the longest day of the year. Guests can expect bonfires on the sand, dinners by the water and a vibrant atmosphere at the signature rooftop Pool Club honouring the height of summer.
