Jakes Hotel Unveils Newly Reimagined Oceanfront Bungalows On Jamaica’s South Coast
Jakes Hotel has unveiled six completely reimagined oceanfront bungalows on Jamaica’s South Coast. Guided by Jakes founder Sally Henzell’s signature hand in using stained glass, batik textiles, and sculptural plaster, the three Octopussy Bungalows and three Seapuss Bungalows are among the most singular places to sleep in the Caribbean, with outdoor showers that open directly to the sea.
The Octopussy Bungalows, each with a private deck and open rooftop, and Seapuss Bungalows, each with its own private deck, arrive three months after the hotel reopened following Hurricane Melissa, which struck the region in late October 2025 and prompted an extensive restoration of the property. The hotel welcomed guests again on December 18, 2025, and this spring, unveiled its upgraded bungalows.

Jakes, founded by designer and artist Sally Henzell, was designed with her philosophy—build with local hands, honor beauty in the handmade, let community lead—runs through every room, wall, and surface of the property, and the new bungalows are no exception.
Inside each bungalow, the interiors draw from the natural palette of the surrounding coast: the bright turquoise of the water, the textured corals and white gold of seashells washed ashore, the deep greens of the palms just beyond the window. It is in the details that Henzell’s influence is most felt.
Each decorated entirely unique, the bungalows were made for a certain kind of traveler—the poet, the solo wanderer, the romantic, the honeymooner. The ones who come to connect—with the sea, the stars, and themselves. Handmade headboards are inset with fragments of colored stained glass, jewel-toned blues, greens, and reds that catch the light and throw small pools of color across the plaster walls. Batik and African-print textiles, richly patterned in deep indigo, red and gold, are draped across the beds, their hand-dyed surfaces a quiet counterpoint to the crisp white of the mosquito netting overhead. Everywhere, the walls are sculpted rather than simply painted: curved, layered, and finished in the vivid hues that have become a Jakes signature.

Outdoor Showers at the Edge of the Sea
Perhaps no detail better captures the Jakes spirit than the outdoor showers. The Seapuss Bungalows also have an outdoor bathtub. Set into sculpted stucco enclosures painted in the same vivid palette as the rooms themselves, each outdoor shower opens directly to the sea. A matte black rainfall head. A view of crashing surf. Conch shells tucked into the plasterwork as decoration. A driftwood branch threaded through the wall of one, functioning as both art and robe hook. Bathing here is less a daily ritual than a small act of surrender to the landscape.
The Octopussy Bungalows take the relationship with the outdoors a step further, with private rooftop terraces that offer unobstructed views across the water and of the sky. Ideal for watching the sunset and stars or gathering under a full moon—Jakes is known for its moonlit evenings and alfresco gatherings that spill from dusk well into the night.
